Vacation Care

Parents of Nimbin! Save Our Holiday Club! For almost 20 years Nimbin Holiday Club has been a part of the community, and we will be running this summer from our new venue, at Nimbin Central School.

Originally set up by Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre to give the kids of Nimbin a safe place to have fun with their friends in school holidays and opportunities to go to different places and experience new things, our program activities and excursions have always been directed by the suggestions of our children and families. Until this year, the program has been funded by DET under a specific grants program which will end in June 2021 for good. If Nimbin Holiday Club is to survive, we have to change the model completely. Right now, we need your help to find out what kind of program the families in our community need and what kind of activities our children want to do in their free time.

Our funding has previously only allowed us to provide a limited number of days and hours, but now we have an opportunity to extend hours and provide an even cheaper service which qualifies for the child care subsidy and will truly cater for diverse families in our community, including working parents. In order for us to commit to the large amount of workload involved in such an expansion we need to find it if there is actually a demand for an expanded service.

You can help by completing the online survey currently available for parents here.

What is Nimbin Vacation Care (aka Nimbin Holiday Club)?

For many years NNIC has run low cost school holiday activities for Nimbin children aged 5 -12 years. The program includes many excursions as a means to overcome the isolation of many local children. Other activities such as badminton, cricket, clay modeling and painting occur at the Nimbin Community Centre Youth Club Building.

How Do My Children Take Part? The Program of activities is sent out to school and is also made available via NNIC, this website and face book prior to each round of school holidays. Call 02 66 891692 or visit NNIC during our opening hours to book your child/children in for a particular activity.

Staff & Organisation The project employs a part time coordinator and up to a dozen male and female trained casual staff for each holiday period. The coordinator's responsibility is to process enrolments, prepare advertising, book venues, organise transport and equipment, hire staff and other administration as required.

Interested in Working For the Project? Register your interest in the program anytime at NNIC and the coordinator will contact you. You must be good at communicating with small children and demonstrate an understanding of their needs. All staff are required to do the “Working With Children” check.

Can parents attend? Parents are welcome to volunteer for the services. Where parents volunteer they may receive a discount for program enrolments. Parents who volunteer are required to undertake the Working With Children check.

What does it Cost? Daily Fees are generally around $12 per day for each child. Discounts are available where there is more than one child enrolled per family. Where the program involves excursions, movie tickets, bus fares etc, the Daily Fees are modifed to make the program as accessible as possible for all families.
